Five Years Already?

Everyone loved this band.

I never got it.

They're okay. I enjoy them. But when I say people loved. I mean people loved.

Although half the time I think I'm listening to Rival Schools. Never the wiser.

Renee Heartfelt - Magdalene. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Mondays-Lite

It never crossed my mind when I first heard "Connected."

At the time I was a casual fan of the Happy Mondays.

After a decade and a half and a couple of re-listens, it's pretty clear.

Total. Mondays. Worship.

This is not a criticism. This is not a bad thing. This is what it is.

Embrace it. Enjoy it.

Stereo MC's - Connected. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Keep On Raving On

I believe they appeared on the classic Rave 'til Dawn compilation. At least that is how I recall first hearing them.

I have a standing, self-imposed directive: Buy cheap nineties dance/electronic music when you stumble upon it.

1992 and ninety-nine cents. This fit my strict parameters.

A few weeks later I came across another Shamen disc. It was $2.99. I put it back. Based on my own rules, it should have been purchased. However, I wanted to wait to see what I thought about the first bargain buy.

Now I'm hoping no one bought the other disc over the past three weeks. I like my chances.

The Shamen - Make It Mine. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Action Figurine

With one release they produced a set of toys. For all I know they might have done it with other albums as well.

I didn't buy them.

Now I look for them.

Not that I'm a toy collector. But I am a Super Furry Animals collector.

Music and the related items that come with it.

Cymru

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it is the highest selling Welsh language album of all time.

I can't imagine that was a difficult record to break.

Super Furry Animals - Mwng (Disc 1) (Disc 2). ??? New.

Industrial

There was a time I'd buy anything on Wax Trax! That time was middle school and high school.

I'm not sure what possessed me to make this particular purchase last month. I'm glad I did.

I almost bought a Sister Machine Gun album a couple of weeks ago. I should have.

And I not-so-jokingly talked about going to see Skinny Puppy last week. I didn't.

Front Line Assembly - Iceolate. Long in the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Fat Boy Slim

Yes. It's been over ten years since I first made the connection.

I still find it surprising.

Holiday (Late)

Happy Thanksgiving to the American readership.

For the rest. Happy Thursday.

I can hear the drums outside.

Behind

I don't own the last two albums

I'm generally on top of these things. Sometimes my pre-ordering falls through the cracks. Cheapness also plays a role.

Hopefully Christmas delivers.

It's on you Chuck and Jeanne.

Backed

I appreciate the Welsh language tracks the Super Furry Animals include on many of their singles.

I don't understand a single word. Although it is part of my heritage. So it's nice to see.

Previewed

It came from Phantom Power.

I first heard it on the Rings Around the World tour.

This could be why it took me so long to find it.

My First

This was my first Super Furry Animals purchase.

After reading about the band in Select I decided I needed to hear them.

I bought the single through an email based mail order. In my pre-Amazon world this was the easiest way for me to track down imports.

Tower Records carried imports and I would occasionally find what I needed there. But all of their compact discs, import or otherwise, cost an arm and a leg. I can't imagine how they went under.

Most of my early to mid-nineties U.K. needs were satisfied through the magic of well-hidden cash.

All Aboard

I thought about going to the Scream reunion show.

I realized I'll be in Pittsburgh for the Family Christmas. Extended family.

After that I wondered if Gray Matter had ever hopped on the reunion express.

Or Severin.

Either or. I'd take either. Or or.

XCHORUSX

Any mention of A18 should immediately turn into a discussion about how Chorus of Disapproval is the greatest of the West Coast Straight Edge bands.

Yes, the greatest.

A18 - Dear Furious. Long in the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Harley

I can't find the Harley/Black Market Baby photograph anywhere.

I can't remember what book it appears in.

I'm no help.

To Each His Own

I don't understand Jawbreaker worship.

They are a great band. Not the greatest. Definitely better than good.

Although "Shield Your Eyes" is pretty fantastic. And the reason I repurchased this album.

You win the day Jawbreaker.

Jawbreaker - Bivouac. Long in the Tooth. Used.

DVD

If you haven't already done so, do yourself a favor and check out the Rings Around the World and Phantom Power DVDs.

You won't regret it.

Well. You might.

But I don't think so.

Non-Issue

A few months ago I abandoned Firefox for Safari. A few years prior to that I abandoned Safari for Firefox.

Since returning I have only one complaint. It is a minor one. But it has to do with posting on Blogger.

Every post I make has a weird extra large space between the first "paragraph" and second "paragraph." The spaces between all other "paragraphs" are normal.

SFA Overload

Bobb put in a Super Furry Animals request.

He will get more than he bargained for.

So will the rest of you.

The Struggle

How much can I really say about Dodgy?

And I'll struggle with it again next month after Good Enough arrives in the mail.

Northwest

Initially I stayed away because they were from Oregon not Washington.

It was a brief moratorium. I was a kid. I didn't know any better.

The Spinanes - Strand. Amazon.com. Used.

The Office

The first time I heard the song was as the opening theme for The Office. It was perfect for the show.

With a little digging, really minimal digging, I found out it was a Rod Stewart song.

I tracked down a copy.

Recently, as in the past couple of months, I learned the Stereophonics did a cover version. Somehow it had flown under my radar.

My favorite Rod Stewart song recorded by one of my favorite bands.

I couldn't go wrong.

It didn't disappoint.

Two Shots

I'm pretty sure Manic Street Preachers opened for Guns N' Roses on one of their U.S. tours.

What a tour that must have been.

I wasn't lucky enough to go.

I still haven't been lucky enough to see the Manics live.

They continue to elude me.

I tried on two occasions. Sort of.

I think I missed my chance.

Go Buy It

Solange - Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Amazon.com. Used.

Go Buy It

Pet Shop Boys - So Hard. Amazon.com. Used.

Big In Japan

I still haven't heard Big In Japan.

This isn't right.

I don't know if they ever put anything on compact disc.

I'd settle for vinyl. Digital.

Please help.

Procrastination

I only knew there was a follow-up when I stumbled upon it in New Zealand. I decided not to buy it. I thought I could find it at home, possibly cheaper.

I returned from New Zealand in December of 2002.

I finally got around to making the purchase in October of 2009.

It was cheaper.

JJ72 - I To Sky. Amazon.com. Used.

Four for Six

I thought I was one short of the album discography.

It turns out I am two short.

I didn't realize a new one came out this year.

Thank you Wikipedia.

Don't Forget

It was my loss.

I sort of forgot about James after the Laid album.

Outside of a few conversations with Mike about Wah Wah I didn't really think of or listen to the band.

Some time around 1997/1998 I discovered Whiplash in Judith's disc collection. I couldn't get enough of it.

I'll listen to "Tomorrow" on repeat for hours at a time. I've done it as recently as three weeks ago.

Everyone should.

James - Whiplash. Amazon.com. Used.

Gypsy. Six Feet Under Records Web Store. New.

Not What You Think

They don't sound like what I expected them to sound like. Based on their name alone.

I expected Dub Narcotic Sound System. Or Asian Dub Foundation.

They are neither.

Dubstar - Disgraceful. Amazon.com. Used.

Sorry In Advance

Old Underworld is terrible. Just terrible!

This isn't to say I shouldn't own it.

Underworld - Change the Weather. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Make It a Double

I frown upon the double LP/CD.

Too much filler.

Although I think my opinion is reserved for rock music.

Because when it comes to Front 242. I'm OK with the effort.

Sure. It's not a pure double. That's fine. It gets a pass.

Front 242 - 05:22:09:12 Off. Amazon.com. Used.

Eighties Sax

In the 1980s bands weren't afraid of the saxophone.

That was a special time.

High Heat

It was an interesting line up.

I think they came on after Tool. They might have come on before Tool. Either way, both came on after the Rage Against the Machine debacle.

I had never heard them or heard of them. They were the most interesting performance of the day. Other than The Goats of course.

I wore a Dickies flannel that day. It was the middle of the summer. A terrible clothing choice on so many levels.

Front 242 - Tyranny (For You). Long in the Tooth. Used.

Production

Whenever I see "Produced for Reissue by Bruce Dickinson" I wonder if it is the Bruce Dickinson.

Mannequin

A classic album. An important album. A definitive album.

But I don't enjoy any of it the way I enjoy "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

A powerful song, suitable for the hidden gem of the Spader-McCarthy filmography.

Stolen

In middle school and high school Primus was our band.

Punks. Skaters. Indie kids. Art students.

At some point the dirty hippies took them away.

They still haven't given them back.

I don't think they ever will.

Primus - Pork Soda. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Dialed In

When you're not getting Dischord's greatest you're getting Elliott Smith.

Sometimes both.

Lois - Infinity Plus. AKA Music. Bargain bin.
