Some Wins Are Better Than Others

Bringing Suede back from my first trip to England is much better than bringing Oasis back from my second trip to England.

Nothing against Definitely Maybe.

Suede. New.

Cover Famous

I like Frente!

I like them so much I went to see them three times.

I don't like them enough to check out anything after Marvin the Album.

Frente! - Marvin the Album. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Disposable Import Income

I would buy just about anything that earned a mention in a U.K. music magazine.

Because of that habit, I have a plethora of singles and albums from forgotten bands of the 2000s. I like most of these random purchases. Even if my interest never made it past the single or debut full-length.

Looking Too

I started looking for the compilation a couple of years ago. Casually looking. I didn't know any of the bands, but it was Factory Records related.

Now that I have it I want to know more about the bands. And more about their material. If there is any.

A Factory Sample Too. Long In the Tooth. Used.

As Seen On TV

When I saw it on TV I had to have it. However, I didn't want to pay the TV price and the requisite shipping and handling fees.

As always, the bargain bin delivers.

I'm hoping for the same kind of luck with Jock Jams.

Tropical Thunder. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

O'Mahony Week

I like every band Dan O'Mahony has ever been a part of.

Unless there is a secret stinker out there I'm unaware of.

You can follow him on Twitter here.

411 - This Isn't Me. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Speak 714 - The Scum Also Rises. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Gateway

My three gateways to Japanese music:

1. Momus
2. Pizzicato Five/Matador
3. Grand Royal

Grand Royal is a who's who of "International Alternative for Dummies." That being said, I still enjoy a lot of their releases.

Buffalo Daughter - New Rock. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Solo Outing

It's no Velocity Girl. It's not even close.

But in the absence of any additional Velocity Girl material. It will do.

Fandom

Introducing Stereophonics to Chad was a great thing.

Now someone else loves them as much as I do.

Sure, their shows are well-attended. But not by anyone I know.

Two Princes

I divide Sub Pop into two eras of critical and financial success.

Era One: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney.

Era Two: The Shins, The Fleet Foxes.

If you ask me, and I know you're not, the best stuff came out between the two.

Interesting, diverse and getting better with age.

Class of '95

My Les Thugs tee lives forever in my senior yearbook. A layered look including a Nine Inch Nails long sleeve purchased in York.

York, England. Not Pennsylvania.

It was a look. Not a good one. But a look.

Les Thugs - Strike. Amazon.com. Used.

Subway

I once saw a girl on the N/R wearing a JJ72 hooded sweatshirt.

She didn't look like the type. If JJ72 fans have a type.

She wasn't it.

Pit Stop

I stopped for a sandwich in Te Awamutu.

Not only was it convenient for lunch and a pee on my drive to Auckland. It is also the ancestral home of the Brothers Finn.

Boxed

The only physical copy I ever owned.

The case is long gone. I'm fairly certain the cassette is in a shoe box, in a bin, in the basement of my parents' house.

Inspiration

While watching The Wedding Singer on TBS I realized True wasn't enough. I needed more.

It was time to expand my Spandau Ballet collection.

A perfect candidate for the purchase of a greatest hits package.

In the Vault

According to Wikipedia there is an unreleased third album.

It needs to see the light of day.

JJ72 - Oxygen (Single 1). Amazon.com. Used.

It's 2010.

I wonder if I'm the only person in the world working to complete the Dodgy compact disc discography.

Espanol

Before the repurchase of Gone Glimmering I would occasionally confuse Chavez and Gomez.

After the repurchase of Gone Glimmering I no longer confuse Chavez and Gomez.

It is Chavez I like.

It is Gomez I don't like.

Chavez - Gone Glimmering. Amazon.com. Used.

Old Timers

Fastbacks had already been around by the time I heard The Question Is No.

It's strange to think of a Seattle scene pre-Sub Pop.

Outside of Heart.

Canadians

Sub Pop had a seven inch in their catalog featuring four Canadian bands. This would have been around the time Love Tara was released. I bought that instead.

I remember it being four bands. It might have been three.

Eric's Trip. Sloan. A French-Canadian band. And a fourth.

Please confirm. Somebody.

Eric's Trip - Purple Blue. Amazon.com. Used.

Start Stop

It's nice to work on the discography of a short-lived band with no chance of a reunion.

A defined set of full-lengths, singles and a greatest hits package.

There is always light at the end of the purchasing tunnel.

Out of Order

At this rate I will own every single from Tilt.

Before I own Tilt.

God Save Deneuve

Paris is better than Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols.

Malcolm McLaren - Paris (Disc 1) (Disc 2). AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Locals

Metropolis Records.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The first I've heard of it.

Then again, I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of "modern" industrial releases.

We're Living In a Slot Drive World

The three-inch compact disc might be the worst format known to man.

Don't Bother

As obsessive as I am about buying singles, I'm not a stickler for owning every international version.

The U.S. version of Sunshine & Love is plenty for me.
