Doppelganger

Roland Gift versus Joleon Lescott:

Fine Young Cannibals - The Raw & The Cooked. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Go Buy It

Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster. Best Buy. New.

Reds

They're unapologetic socialists.

So dedicated to the movement, they played a show in Cuba.

Try to top that Rage Against the Machine.

Straight and Alert

The drugs don't work.

Although for some bands they really, really do.

Safe

The success of Parachutes opened the door for the pretenders.

I bought my share.

Go Buy It

Swamp Thing - In Shame. 6131 Records Webstore. New.

Biding Time

After forgetting to purchase the import upon its release, I was forced to look for a copy on eBay. It was often listed, but would go for amounts I was never willing to pay.

Eventually, I stopped looking.

This past year I decided to fill out my Super Furry Animals discography. I finally picked up the release. For well under a dollar.

Sports

Travis reminds me of the NCAA Tournament.

Specifically, The Man Who.

Travis - Good Feeling. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain rock (New!).

Marshall Street

As I would so often do, I traded in a handful of compact discs for store credit.

This particular pile was all hardcore.

I used the credit to purchase albums by the Moody Blues and John Cougar Mellencamp.

The clerk made fun of me.

I stand by my decision.

Undertow - At Both Ends. Amazon.com. Used.

Clarify

The previous post came off as slightly dismissive.

That's not the case at all.

I like The Stands. But listening to them again reminded me how few British bands of the 2000s had any staying power.

The forgotten, recent past.

What I Am

I'm looking for Edie Brickell.

Because of Baby Spice.

Emma Bunton - A Girl Like Me. Amazon.com. Used.

Effort

It makes me wonder, "Am I missing out on a non-American Mix?"

Stereo MC's - Supernatural: American Mix. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

And Another

I had been under the impression that the only Milemarker compact discs were the three released by Jade Tree.

That is not the case.

Every year or so I find another.

I'm expecting to find more.

Milemarker - Non Plus Ultra. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Gift Me

I secretly wanted the anniversary box set for Christmas. I dropped a hint or two.

I didn't need it. I really didn't need it.

I never need it.

I still don't have it.

I still want it.

Redeemable

It's better than Sonic Boom. Much better.

That's still not saying much.

Shades Apart - Eyewitness. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Surprise!

This was certainly a surprise find.

I thought every Seaweed full-length appeared on Sub Pop. Or during their brief stint in the majors.

Seaweed - Actions and Indications. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Gold Rush

The rush to acquire "alternative" acts in the nineties led to some strange signings by the major labels.

Strange in the sense that there wasn't a lot of crossover potential beyond 120 Minutes or Headbangers Ball.

Into Another. Shudder to Think. Orange 9mm.

Into Another - Seemless. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Either Or

I'm trying to figure out if Battleflag is a Pigeonhed song or a Lo-Fidelity Allstars song. I was always under the impression that it was a Lo-Fidelity Allstars song.

I'm pretty sure I was wrong.

Hasty

After putting this on I thought, "Hey, maybe I should check out The Enkindels/Enkindel again."

A decision I will surely regret.

Initial Records Magic Weekend. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Down

I grew up with Stephen.

We ended up living together in Syracuse.

I was surprised to see Girls Against Boys in his music collection. I should not have been.

Years earlier he had introduced me to The Soup Dragons.

I always forgot how similar our taste in music was.

Girls Against Boys - Freak*On*Ica. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

VHS

In high school I purchased an A&M VHS featuring a Soundgarden video or two. A Monster Magnet video. And a Hammerbox video.

I really liked Hammerbox. Although at the time, I think I was the only one.

I'm surprised I haven't come across Numb in a bargain bin. I wouldn't think twice about repurchasing.

That being said, I'm fairly certain it hasn't aged well.

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Overpriced

To be honest, $1.99 is $1.99 too much for this album.

But I'm paying.

Dog Eat Dog - All Boro Kings. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

Shelf Life

I felt like Girls Against Boys had a lengthy career. Lengthy for a post-hardcore band.

A quick search informed me that they are still together.

I suppose the key to longevity is the odd hiatus here and there.

Girls Against Boys - Sexy Sam/I'm From France. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain punk.

See Below

I'm pressed for time and don't have a whole lot to say about Gong.

That being said, you should still check them out.

Gong - A Wingful of Eyes. Amazon.com. Used.

Wordless

There isn't a whole lot to say about an instrumental act. Sub Pop. Mid-nineties release. I'm buying.

5ive Style. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain bin.

JNCO

Big pants made for a seamless transition from "hardcore kid" to "club kid."

Metalheadz Presents: Platinum Breakz II (Disc 1) (Disc 2). Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

YouTube

Why is it so hard to find The Mighty Mighty Bosstones clip from Clueless?

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Where'd You Go? Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Waning

Coming Up and Head Music tend to run together for me.

I confuse which singles come from which album with some regularity.

And don't get me started on A New Morning. I never remember any of those singles.

Go Buy It

The Cardigans - Carnival. Amazon.com. Used.

Awake

I went to bed at 4:00 a.m.

I woke up at 7:30 a.m.

My plan was to watch Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur. Live on ESPN2.

Postponed.

I blame my Google sports calendar. I blame my Live Soccer TV Schedules email. And I blame myself for not paying attention during the week.

McGuinn

"Further" sounds like The Byrds.

Isn't that reason enough to want this?

The Boo Radleys - Barney (...And Me). Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain bin.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Opener

It took me a long time to get into this album.

I loved the debut and Stay Together. Both instant classics. For years I even preferred Coming Up.

I eventually came around on it.

When I listen to it today I can't figure out what the issue was.

Beyond my intense dislike for the opening track, "Introducing the Band."

Late Night

I don't usually watch late night talk shows.

Although I randomly caught the Pulp appearance on Letterman.

My roommate freshman year had it on.

I wish I could find it on YouTube.

I remember it being good. It might not have been.

Restart

The first three albums sound like the same band.

The last four albums sound like a different band.

A restart with His 'N' Hers.

Pulp - His 'N' Hers. eBay. Used.
