Beyond Red Red Wine

About ten years ago my uncle introduced me to the merits of UB40.

Merits beyond their cover song mega hits.

After that the conversation moved on to the merits of Jeff Beck. Someone who I haven't yet gotten around to exploring. Unless The Yardbirds count.

UB40 - CCCP - Live In Moscow. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Go Buy It

Iceburn - Poetry of Fire. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes

The Clash are classic. The Clash are important. I think The Clash are an amazing band. You should too.

Yet at this point in my life I'd much rather listen to Big Audio Dynamite.

Why Oh Why

It was during my obsession with Iceland.

Icelandic hip hop. For some reason I thought this sounded like a great idea. I blame Q.

Quarashi - Jinx. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Wrong Here, Wrong Now

I know Jesus Jones is a band and not a man.

I knew this in 1991. This didn't stop me from referring to the band as a "he" or "him."

I still do it today.

Jesus Jones - Doubt. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Cold War

If a dictatorship had a soundtrack, I tend to think it would sound like Front 242.

Front 242 - Tyranny for You. Long In the Tooth. Used.

Roots

This is where it all began. The movie and soundtrack sparked my interest in ABBA. From there it became more of an obsession.

It continues.

Trout Mask Replica

For years I avoided the Beefeater compact disc. I didn't know anything about them, but I knew the name reminded me of Captain Beefheart.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Captain Beefheart. But it's not something I want to be reminded of on a Dischord release.

Although for ninety-nine cents I can put aside my reservations.

I'll Let It Go This Time

Sure, they might have disrespected the Pet Shop Boys in an interview.

But they're still one of my new favorites.

Hurts - Better Than Love. Amazon.com. New.

Start Choppin'

I picked it up because I liked the cover and the name of the band.

When I got home I saw J Mascis under the disc.

I knew I made a good choice.

Witch - Paralyzed. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Forever On Pause

I had been looking forward to Spice World. So much so I paid to see it in a theater.

I went with a group of friends. They went for laughs. I went out of a very real interest in the Spice Girls. Mel C in particular.

It was a free movie OnDemand a couple of years ago. Cathy was not into it. It was stopped. That was the end of my encore viewing.

Spice Girls - Spice. Amazon.com. Used.

Indie Dance Party

I always assumed Dub Narcotic Sound System would sound like Asian Dub Foundation.

Not at all.

Go Buy It

Floorpunch - New Jersey. Six Feet Under Records Webstore. New.

Kids Stuff

I always considered Screeching Weasel "kids stuff." Even as a kid.

I suppose that was my feeling on pop punk in general. Although that never stopped me from listening to Green Day.

When I made an arbitrary decision as a teen, I stuck to my guns.

Happy Fourth

Kelly's Heroes is quasi-patriotic. Right?

Maybe not this medium. Close enough.

Black Grape - Kelly's Heroes. Amazon.com. Used.

Gorges

I saw The Get Up Kids once.

I can't remember who else played. Mineral possibly. Copper possibly. Although they might have been a separate show. Or two separate shows.

I drove from Syracuse to Ithaca. Unless it was freshman year. In that case I got a ride.

I saw a lot of good bands at the Cornell Community Room. Bands on the lighter side of hardcore. If that was your thing. It was mine.

The Get Up Kids - Guilt Show. Amazon.com. Used.

Reading Rainbow

This is the second time I've owned this album.

This is the first time I've noticed the title is Satisfiction, not Satisfaction.

Melony - Satisfiction. Amazon.com. Used.
