Techno, Trance, Whatever, Anything

My mission that day was the purchasing of "techno."

I hoped to replace old Nigel Richards mixtapes with compact disc versions. Why I thought I'd find these I may never know.

I was also on the look out for Keoki discs. I still am.

I settled for Orbital, Sunscreem and Grooverider. All three for under five dollars. Total.

Techno success.

Writer's Block

Three days and I haven't been able to think of anything to say about this album.

That's not a positive. That's not a negative. It has nothing to do with what I think about the album.

(I like it.)

I just have nothing to say.

Three days.

Maybe I'll have better luck with Whip It On.

The Raveonettes - Chain Gang of Love. eBay. Used.

He's Cool, He's Hip, He's Forty-Five

Sometime around 1993 or 1994 I owned a Girls Against Boys t-shirt.

I lost interest in them, and eventually the shirt as well.

Not my dad.

During the late nineties he could be seen around the house sporting my abandoned shirt.

I regained interest, and now I wonder if that shirt is still around.

Dance Dance Roses

This is the second time I've purchased this album.

Ten years later and thirteen dollars cheaper.

It's amazing what a few years can do to the cost of a forgotten artist.

After ripping the disc into my iTunes I searched the artist to make sure the artwork and tags were in order.

"Grooverider" showed up on a Stone Roses single as well. This was the first time it had crossed my mind that these Grooveriders were one and the same.

I'm sure it would have crossed my mind sooner if I hadn't sold Mysteries of Funk a few years before embarking on my Stone Roses single shopping spree.

Family Tree

I like anything in the Token Entry family of bands.

This goes beyond the Ernie Parada family of bands.

Although I like all of those bands as well.

As far as I know there isn't a misstep in the bunch.

Nine Lives - The Fugitive.

No Say

I believe I saw them open for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

A dark show to say the least. An enjoyable one.

Both products of the hype machine.

I don't know what either band is currently up to. My interest or lack thereof has no bearing on the recorded output or touring of a particular band. Surprisingly.

Although I'm pretty sure The Raveonettes still exist.

Curio

I don't know what you would call it.

It certainly isn't a Digipak.

It is the first and only time I've seen this type of jewel case. I'm not sure if Victory Records used them for any other releases. As far as I know, this is the only one. Although by the time VR64 rolled around I wasn't particularly knowledgeable on the label or their output.

At first I didn't like it. The book was crushed by the tray.

Now I find myself enjoying the novelty of it. I'm always partial to packaging that deviates from the status quo.

Dark Danish

If you were part of a guy-girl musical duo, the early-aughts were the years for you.

I suppose riding the coattails of The White Stripes success.

Although I prefer The Raveonettes.

Prog

The reunion show in Brooklyn was the first time I had heard anything from End Transmission.

It sounded like progcore. And I was into it.

I wanted to buy the album, but it took a few years before I got around to it.

I'm glad I finally remembered.

Most people dismiss it. I find it interesting.

Outlet Shopping

I was with Cathy at the Banana Republic outlet in Franklin Mills.

Another guy was there with his girlfriend.

He was wearing a Nine Lives hooded sweatshirt.

I wasn't.

I wish I could have bought it from him.

Instead I went home with boxers.

Getting There

Another piece in the discography puzzle.

I believe completing the Dodgy discography to be a fairly manageable goal.

Low output.

Certainly not as difficult as my Blur attempt.

And by difficult I mean time consuming. Money consuming.

Yr

While popular with Riot Grrrls, the K Records roster and Sonic Youth, "Yr" is not popular with me.

I don't remember when I first stumbled upon it. Bikini Kill I think. Maybe Liz Phair. Something on that end of the indie rock spectrum.

I thought it was stupid then. And I think it's stupid now.

Maybe I don't "get it." I'm fine with that.

Mutt

I'm a hodgepodge of nationalities. Nothing exotic. Sum total: white.

Irish, German and Welsh for the most part. Although my dad likes to throw Cornish and French Huguenot in there as well. I can't be bothered with the tiny percentages.

I don't have fierce pride for any one part of my ethnic stew, but I suppose I identify most as an Irish Catholic. I was saddled with a middle name of McHugh after all.

With age I've gained a greater interest in the Welsh part of my heritage. And of Wales in particular.

I find a joy in discovering the Welsh-ness of bands I listen to. Some I have sought out because they are Welsh.

I will always give a Welsh band a chance.

Even Feeder. Which I quickly found out was a mistake.

Thanks Select

Fixed

A request for a Stereophonics track on the Livewire board sent me searching through my discs.

I didn't have the track, but during the search I realized that I had to re-rip a few singles. They were initially ripped during my "no repeating of songs" phase, when hard drive space was limited.
