Sing the Sorrow

I remember Tim saying how funny it was seeing a member of Redemption 87 at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Redemption 87 - All Guns Poolside. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Seventeen Minutes In Heaven

I warned you, the reader, that there would be a steady stream of Heaven 17 coming your way. Enjoy. Or don't.

Heaven 17 - (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang (The Rapino Brothers Remixes). Amazon.com. Used.

Go Buy It

The Cardigans - Your New Cuckoo. Amazon.com. Used.

Fading

The Lightning Seeds seem to be another band slowly fading into obscurity. Don't let it happen.

The Lightning Seeds - You Showed Me. Amazon.com. Used.

Clueless

I didn't know anything about this band when I bought the seven inch because it was on Sub Pop.

I didn't know anything about this band when I bought the compact disc because it was in the bargain bin.

I still don't know anything about this band.

S.F. Seals - Truth Walks In Sleepy Shadows. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

A Rare Miss

I thought they were a Sub Pop band. Which is the only reason I made the purchase. They might have been at some point. This particular release is on Epitaph.

It makes me feel like I'm listening to The Aquabats or some such nonsense. Lesson learned.

Gas Huffer - The Inhuman Ordeal of Special Agent Gas Huffer. Amazon.com. Used.

United By Fate

I really hated this album on first listen, right around when it came out.

I think I wanted a new Rival Schools record instead. Not that it was my choice. But that's what I wanted.

A few months ago I picked it up in a bargain bin (fittingly) and it's not so bad. My initial reaction was skewed based on Rival Schools desires.

So now that there actually is a new Rival Schools album, have I bothered to listen to it? Nope.

Walking Concert - Run To Be Born. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Kill Mother Fucking Depeche Mode

That would be a funny name wouldn't it? That's not really what it stands for though, right?

KMFDM - Virus. Amazon.com. Used.

Going Solo

Andy Bell released a record more ready-made for the gay clubs than anything Erasure has put out in the past decade. And it is amazing in every way.

Andy Bell - Electric Blue. Amazon.com. Used.

Go Buy It

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Machine. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Yup Yup Yups

I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs once. It was some time prior to their major label release. But the buzz was already surrounding them.

While I enjoyed their set, I wasn't sure what all the excitement was about. Even with Karen O's recent solo success, I'm still not sure why they were a band of the moment. But they were.

Eventually Fever to Tell came out. I thought "Maps" was a great single.

Eight years later, I bought the album.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Put A Bird On It!

I didn't bother listening to Sleater-Kinney until I started watching Portlandia.

Total poseur.

Sleater-Kinney - The Hot Rock. Amazon.com. Used.

Touch Me, I'm Dick

What a comp! No really. What a comp.

Pretty much every artist is a heavy hitter from the era.

And it reminded me that I need to repurchase the Tad albums sooner rather than later.

The Grunge Years. Long In the Tooth. Used.

De-Hype

I sort of forgot about Bjork. Not that I forgot about her. But her newest release doesn't seem to garner the excitement that it once would have.

I haven't heard it.

Bjork - Venus As A Boy (Promotional Single). Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Nostalgia

I forgot how good The Strokes are. The first two albums in particular.

I can't believe Is This It is ten years old. Where has the time gone?

The Strokes - The Modern Age. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Update

Since my last post I've been listening to more Damon & Naomi and less Luna.

I still think Luna is the better option. But the gap has closed.

Damon & Naomi - The Earth Is Blue. Amazon.com. Used.

Emperor Norton

I'm not sure how I first stumbled upon Emperor Norton. It might have been through Ladytron. Or it might have been through Momus or Kahimi Karie (I can only assume one of the two linked me to Fantastic Plastic Machine).

I really don't know.

That being said. It's been a fairly consistent label over the years. I'll always take a chance on an Emperor Norton act.

Naan Commercial Hits. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

I Know I Am

Following the success of Kreayshawn, I think the world is ready for a Lady Sovereign revival.

The Ordinary Boys vs Lady Sovereign - Nine2Five. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Break On Through

It always fascinates me which U.K. acts/songs break through to the U.S. charts.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

I am speaking of course of the nineties up until today. Beatles. Rolling Stones. New Wave. That doesn't count.

The Soup Dragons - Divine Thing. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

System Failure

I can't believe I posted late-era Big Country before their masterpiece.

I won't let it happen again.

Big Country - The Crossing. Amazon.com. Used.

Commercial

I don't really know how to describe M People. They weren't one of the Manchester acts I obsessed over through the early-nineties. Perhaps they were a bit too "commercial" for my teenage tastes.

But as we know, things change. This is step one in discography building.

M People - The Best of M People. Amazon.com. Used.

Possible Blashphemy

I'm certain I've expressed this sentiment before. But let's reiterate.

With age I've come to prefer Heaven 17 to The Human League.

Has this happened to others? Am I wrong? I think I'm right. Way right.

Heaven 17 - Retox/Detox (Disc 1) (Disc 2). Amazon.com. Used.

CCCP

I had a theory that there was good, modern Russian pop/rock/alternative (whatever you want to call it) out there.

I was correct.

Thank you to Nick in pointing me towards Tesla Boy. And my own investigations have been fruitful. More coming.

If anyone can provide links to Russian music blogs, it would be appreciated. That goes for any country. Thank you.

Tesla Boy - The Tesla Boy EP. iTunes.

Philadelphia's Finest

They were always a lot of fun to see live. They seem to be fading into obscurity. Keep the listening alive.

Franklin. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

This Is What It Is All About

The Agnetha & Frida disc is exactly the kind of gem I dig through bargain bins hoping to find.

My tastes are what they are.

Don't judge me.

Agnetha & Frida: The Voice of ABBA. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Wales Wales Wales

I had completely forgotten about The Darling Buds. Which is odd because of my slight to unhealthy obsession with Welsh-alternative rock.

Once again, thanks to The Cheapest Quest, I was reminded to pick up some releases.

The Darling Buds - Please Yourself. Amazon.com. Used.

Banned

I think the censored cover has become the more rare of the two. I wish I still had that version.

The "offensive" one is boring.

Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Saturday, October 15, 2011

Damn Yankees

Some things are a guilty pleasure. Styx is not one of those things.

Some bands only require a greatest hits package. Styx is not one of those bands.

Styx - The Grand Illusion. Princeton Record Exchange. Bargain bin.

Speaking Of

Speaking of later eras. Alphaville's isn't as good.

Although to be fair, this album isn't that late.

Alphaville - The Breathtaking Blue. Amazon.com. Used.

Costly

Japan releases are too expensive for my bargain tastes. Used or new.

Japan - Oil On Canvas. Amazon.com. Used.

Later Era

The crucial cuts are from the eighties. But I like the later releases just as much.

Echo & The Bunnymen - Rust. Amazon.com. Used.

Renamed

I had a Dayspring ten inch I couldn't give away (which I finally gave away).

Now I wish I had it again.

Grip - Friction Burn Fatal. Marcus. Used.

Don't Know

I don't know anything about this band. I don't even remember them from when I was Sub Pop obsessed in the early to mid-nineties.

But this came out on Sub Pop. And I'm buying it all.

Gorilla - Detox Man. eBay. Used.

Discographies

I don't know why I didn't just upload the discography.

Instead, I sought out a digital version of the seven inch. So here it is.

Frail - New Harmony. eBay. Used.

April

I uploaded this in April 2011. Needless to say I'm a little behind on posting. But I promise. There is a lot of interesting items to come. Although possibly only interesting to me.

Front 242 - Never Stop! Amazon.com. Used.

Friday, October 7, 2011

Oh, Indie

Come was a band I had totally forgotten about until this record popped up in a saved search on eBay.

I will always have a soft spot for bands like this.

It makes me wonder why I ever sold their compact discs in the past. I can only assume for hardcore.

Come - Car. eBay. Used.

Pop, Rock, Other

I need to dip back into New Zealand music. While there and upon my return I was obsessed with it.

Old and new.

I was buying music magazines over there. Perhaps a NZ-centric music blog is what I need.

Googling now.

Crowded House - Locked Out. Amazon.com. Used.

Slowly But Surely

A greatest hits album is not enough for me.

I had the first three albums on cassette. I've now upgraded to compact disc for two of the three.

One to go. And any other greatest hits packages I stumble on.

I can never have enough Culture Club.
