Pinko

I love Ebullition hardcore. Ebullition Records is responsible for some of my favorite releases of the nineties. Screaming, political, crusty.

I'm a fan of most of their discography. Then again I don't have it listed in front of me. I'm sure there are more than a few stinkers.

Like most people, my politics have moderated with age. But at seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty I couldn't get enough of the left-wing rhetoric they were giving me. That style of hardcore meshed well with the books, writers and politics I was into at the time. And opened the door to even more.

To be young and unreasonably idealistic.

Freebie

The import music magazine samplers were an excellent introduction to many bands.

Well worth the ten dollar price of the magazine.

Major chains like Barnes & Noble wouldn't provide the disc or cassette with the magazine. Of course this never stopped me from parting with my hard earned cash for the sampler-free version.

Whenever possible I would make my purchases at international newsstands. Thankfully there happened to be one down the street from my office in New York.

The four Select samplers I have are the best of the bunch.

Go Buy It

Iron Maiden - No Prayer For the Dying. eBay. Used.

Kicking Myself

There is nothing worse than buying a "clean" version of an album by mistake.

Even if it was only $2.99.

Kid Sister

Not to minimize Dannii's output, but Kylie has such a large body of work she will always be my favorite Minogue.

Although Dannii is the hotter of the two.

Dannii Minogue - Neon Nights. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Metal Christmas

I'm not home so there won't be a photograph of the studded box set.

At lease I don't have to move the fifty discs stacked on top of it.

I'm off to unwrap gifts, eat poorly and watch A Christmas Story over and over. With commercials.

Happy holidays to all.

Judas Priest - Metalogy (Disc 1) (Disc 2) (Disc 3) (Disc 4).

A Christmas Mystery

I don't know how or why this made its way into my collection. But I'm glad it did.

It should find its way into your collections as well.

Headwear

Ned's Atomic Dustbin makes me think of bucket hats. Fishing hats.

It was an era for sure.

Although Ned's Atomic Dustbin might not have anything to do with said hats outside of my own mind.

Phish, Zappa, Maiden

Mike: I've just discovered and realized that I need to start listening to Iron Maiden.

Peter: They are incredibly talented. I have about five albums. I'll upload them for you if you want. Number of the Beast first.

Mike: Please do. Thanks man. Steve Harris and his "galloping basslines" have blown this puncher's mind.

Please Read

If you have never read it, you should. If you have read it, read it again.

Tardy to the Party

I'm a late bloomer when it comes to Roxy Music.

At thirteen or fourteen, I hated them.

At eighteen, I began to understand.

The same goes for The Velvet Underground.

Things improve with age. My age. These things were always good. I was the problem.

Roxy Music - Siren. eBay. Used.

I'm sorry if you're not out of print. And I'm inadvertently ruining DIY.

But after all. You were only one dollar.

I'm sure no one will mind.

Vision Street Wear

I was on a waiting list at Croydon Bike Shop for a pair of Vision Street Wear skate shoes when they first dropped.

Let's be honest. My mother was on a waiting list at Croydon Bike Shop for a pair of Vision Street Wear skate shoes when they first dropped.

Turquoise. I insisted on turquoise.

With the revolutionary "ollie pad."

I loved those shoes.

My mom went above and beyond when it came to my sneaker needs. From about second grade until high school. Custom Vans. Vision Street Wear. Airwalks (pre-Payless). Jordans.

Thanks mom.

Not Guilty

It isn't a guilty pleasure because I'm not ashamed of my love for all things Spice.

Baby Spice was never my favorite. But as Emma Bunton she makes a good argument for knocking Melanie C out of my solo top spot. And out of my heart.

The first time I heard her solo material I was listening to the radio in New Zealand. It might have been South Africa. Either way, it was great. Either way, I was driving on the left.

"What Took You So Long."

I was hooked.

Emma - Free Me. AKA Music. Bargain bin.

Go Buy It

PFUNKT. Bandcamp. New.

In Luck

At check out I noticed the disc on top of the incoming merchandise pile.

"How much for the Undertow disc? Oh, I don't care. Just add it to the rest."

Undertow - Control. Long In the Tooth. Used.

Grandiose

When this album came out I claimed it would be remembered as one of the top ten greatest albums of the decade.

I still think it's great.

But I'm backtracking a little bit on my previous position.

Top fifty. Twenty-five maybe.

Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World (Disc 1) (Disc 2). eBay. Used.

Share and Share Alike

It could be poor form to share an album title with The Beatles.

It could be genius marketing to share an album title with The Beatles.

It could be unrelated.

Recommendations?

I hope I'm giving Chad an appropriate sampling of The Replacements.

I don't own a lot.

I should own more.

Pipe Dreams

My cousin and I talked about going to see Bryan Ferry at the Keswick. This was a few years ago.

A relative by marriage owned the theater at one point. He made his fortune in apple juice. Really. He's a very nice man.

Neither of us pursued this plan. Neither of us made the show.

It seemed like a good idea. It probably was.

Although now that I think about it, the show might have been canceled.

Check One Two

When Chad decided to check out The Psychedelic Furs I decided he should check out Roxy Music as well.

Don't Sleep

I didn't listen to The Replacements until later in life. Later being the past couple of years.

It wasn't a conscious decision. It just happened that way.

I told Chad he shouldn't make the same mistake.

Five Years Already?

Everyone loved this band.

I never got it.

They're okay. I enjoy them. But when I say people loved. I mean people loved.

Although half the time I think I'm listening to Rival Schools. Never the wiser.

Renee Heartfelt - Magdalene. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Mondays-Lite

It never crossed my mind when I first heard "Connected."

At the time I was a casual fan of the Happy Mondays.

After a decade and a half and a couple of re-listens, it's pretty clear.

Total. Mondays. Worship.

This is not a criticism. This is not a bad thing. This is what it is.

Embrace it. Enjoy it.

Stereo MC's - Connected. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Keep On Raving On

I believe they appeared on the classic Rave 'til Dawn compilation. At least that is how I recall first hearing them.

I have a standing, self-imposed directive: Buy cheap nineties dance/electronic music when you stumble upon it.

1992 and ninety-nine cents. This fit my strict parameters.

A few weeks later I came across another Shamen disc. It was $2.99. I put it back. Based on my own rules, it should have been purchased. However, I wanted to wait to see what I thought about the first bargain buy.

Now I'm hoping no one bought the other disc over the past three weeks. I like my chances.

The Shamen - Make It Mine. Long In the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Action Figurine

With one release they produced a set of toys. For all I know they might have done it with other albums as well.

I didn't buy them.

Now I look for them.

Not that I'm a toy collector. But I am a Super Furry Animals collector.

Music and the related items that come with it.

Cymru

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it is the highest selling Welsh language album of all time.

I can't imagine that was a difficult record to break.

Super Furry Animals - Mwng (Disc 1) (Disc 2). ??? New.

Industrial

There was a time I'd buy anything on Wax Trax! That time was middle school and high school.

I'm not sure what possessed me to make this particular purchase last month. I'm glad I did.

I almost bought a Sister Machine Gun album a couple of weeks ago. I should have.

And I not-so-jokingly talked about going to see Skinny Puppy last week. I didn't.

Front Line Assembly - Iceolate. Long in the Tooth. Bargain bin.

Fat Boy Slim

Yes. It's been over ten years since I first made the connection.

I still find it surprising.

Behind

I don't own the last two albums

I'm generally on top of these things. Sometimes my pre-ordering falls through the cracks. Cheapness also plays a role.

Hopefully Christmas delivers.

It's on you Chuck and Jeanne.

Backed

I appreciate the Welsh language tracks the Super Furry Animals include on many of their singles.

I don't understand a single word. Although it is part of my heritage. So it's nice to see.

Previewed

It came from Phantom Power.

I first heard it on the Rings Around the World tour.

This could be why it took me so long to find it.

My First

This was my first Super Furry Animals purchase.

After reading about the band in Select I decided I needed to hear them.

I bought the single through an email based mail order. In my pre-Amazon world this was the easiest way for me to track down imports.

Tower Records carried imports and I would occasionally find what I needed there. But all of their compact discs, import or otherwise, cost an arm and a leg. I can't imagine how they went under.

Most of my early to mid-nineties U.K. needs were satisfied through the magic of well-hidden cash.

Go Buy It

Give.

All Aboard

I thought about going to the Scream reunion show.

I realized I'll be in Pittsburgh for the Family Christmas. Extended family.

After that I wondered if Gray Matter had ever hopped on the reunion express.

Or Severin.

Either or. I'd take either. Or or.

Any mention of A18 should immediately turn into a discussion about how Chorus of Disapproval is the greatest of the West Coast Straight Edge bands.

Yes, the greatest.

A18 - Dear Furious. Long in the Tooth. Bargain bin.

I can't find the Harley/Black Market Baby photograph anywhere.

I can't remember what book it appears in.

To Each His Own

I don't understand Jawbreaker worship.

They are a great band. Not the greatest. Definitely better than good.

Although "Shield Your Eyes" is pretty fantastic. And the reason I repurchased this album.

You win the day Jawbreaker.

Jawbreaker - Bivouac. Long in the Tooth. Used.

DVD

If you haven't already done so, do yourself a favor and check out the Rings Around the World and Phantom Power DVDs.

You won't regret it.

Well. You might.

But I don't think so.

Non-Issue

A few months ago I abandoned Firefox for Safari. A few years prior to that I abandoned Safari for Firefox.

Since returning I have only one complaint. It is a minor one. But it has to do with posting on Blogger.

Every post I make has a weird extra large space between the first "paragraph" and second "paragraph." The spaces between all other "paragraphs" are normal.

SFA Overload

Bobb put in a Super Furry Animals request.

He will get more than he bargained for.

So will the rest of you.

How much can I really say about Dodgy?

And I'll struggle with it again next month after Good Enough arrives in the mail.
