For years I assumed Pop Will Eat Itself would sound like Orbital. My assumption was that they were a purely electronic act.
They aren't. I have no idea why I would have thought that.

for some reason PWEI got lumped in with Neds Atomic Dustbin as a "grebo" band... which is a made-up english music journalist term that doesn't really mean too much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grebo_(music). i guess it was just because they were roughly from the same area and brit music journalists are lazy and invent genres.
despite the "grebo" tag, they didn't sound like Neds though. as i recall, they sort of had an industrial dance sound that was kind of unclassifiable, and more in common with say, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine than a bands like Neds or Senseless Things. it may have been confusing that all the PWEI records had graphics by Designer's Republic which gave them a big beat or rave flyer vibe.
I always think of "grebo", real or imagined, as this post-Mondays rave/rock hybrid.
Whatever grebo is. I tend to like most of the associated acts.
But yes. PWEI is nothing like Ned's.
