It was 1987 when I caught the first XOn PointX show. It took place at the legendary Philadelphia space The Garage. The Crowd of 40 or so could not possibly have been prepared for the onslaught of goodwill they were about to witness that night. I stood, jaw gaping wide open, as XOn PointX lay waste the musical stylings of headliners Chain of Strength and Uniform Choice. In a Philly scene still plagued by the "live fast, die young" attitudes of late '70's punk rock, XOn PointX set an entire movement in motion towards positive commitment and the path to righteousness. It would be nearly 2 years before the release of a classic demo. With giant labels such as Revelation and Dischord moving towards indie-rock obscurity, XOn PointX found themselves without a home to release an EP and eventually called it quits. I can still recall the scent of the beer, from the smashed bottles, at the last show in 1989, the final show at The Garage. How would four 10-12 year-old kids affect Philly HXC so deeply?! It seems unbelievable!!!

Recently I've developed a bit of a Xenomania habit.

It's gone from casual interest to obsession.

I spent an hour the other night debating whether to buy the Alex Gardner single digitally or on compact disc. I've yet to come to a decision.

That being said, most of my recent focus has been reserved for Florrie.

Thankfully she's been providing free remixes to satisfy my needs.

Love of Refused transcends hardcore. Love of Refused moves into Hot Topic territory. Especially the later releases.

People should listen to Ink & Dagger instead.

But in the absence of that, stick to this era.

I'd like to know more about the Cabal shirt Rob Fish is wearing in the album art.

It's not a basketball jersey, but appears to be a licensed NBA product. It is sleeved, not a tank.

I remember Mike being very into this album when it came out. If not for him, I probably never would have listened to it. Eventually I might have, but certainly not at the time.

He was partial to James after Laid. And had always been partial to Brian Eno.

I think some of my favorite bargain bin finds are mainstream British acts from the late eighties and early nineties. I'm rarely looking for them. Which makes it all the better.

I especially like finding the albums that don't have the hit single. Too many second and third efforts are disregarded by the listening public. Making me the bargain bin beneficiary.

I'm fairly certain Final Exit is a joke band.

At the very least, tongue in cheek.

I don't know much about them. Beyond being Refused.

The Hope Conspiracy were such a departure from Harvest.

Not a bad departure, but certainly different.

Those first few records are great. As far as I know, they're still together. Still playing. Still recording. Although I haven't heard the more recent releases.

Hard Stance is okay. I don't have any strong opinions one way or the other. I like them. I listen to them. But they're nothing special.

I first bought it because it was pre-Inside Out.

I think that's why most people first picked up their releases.

I'm sure that continues to be the case. Although pre-Rage Against the Machine might be the bigger draw these days.

It's something I've wanted for years. As much as you can want something without making any real effort to find it.

I have a number of self-imposed rules about the order I listen to my purchases, when I rip my purchases and when I upload my purchases.

It's not worth explaining, but it makes sense in my head. I once tried to explain it to Cathy. She looked at me like I was crazy. Rightfully so.

Now I keep it to myself.

Because of these "rules" Viva! Roxy Music was queued up for a little over five months.

I hope the wait was worth it.

At least that's when my friends stumbled on the debut. Independent of each other for the most part.

I know it's cool to hate on Boy Sets Fire.

But I've always loved This Crying, This Screaming, My Voice Is Being Born. "Vehicle" is such an amazing song.

The Day the Sun Went Out also holds up well.

After that, my Boy Sets Fire knowledge is spotty. I'm sure I'll eventually do some reanalyzing via the bargain bin.

I always found it odd that By the Grace of God released albums on Victory Records.

Their message didn't seem to match the commonly held opinions of the label.

A number of great bands worked with Victory Records. It makes me wonder. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle.
